About Jamaica

Jamaica is the third largest island on the Caribbean. The population is approximately 3,000,000. The official language is English but the language on the streets and in rural areas is called Patois. It is a combination of English and Spanish with Portuguese and African phrases which sounds more rhythmic than traditional English.

Jamaica has a rich and diverse culture blended from around the world. Jamaica’s motto is “Out of Many, One People”. The Spanish, Irish, Indians, Chinese and Germans have all left their mark but the African and European influences dominate the culture.

The people love to express themselves through music and dance. Reggae music is Jamaica’s most recognized music. These thumping sounds are rich and infectious and encompass expressions of personal freedom, independence and religion. If you like the sound there are several good Christian reggae artist.

The weather in the summer is very warm with high humidity. It is not unusual for temperatures to be in the 90’s and humidity levels around 70%. The winter is cooler but temperatures still can get into the 80”s. The Blue Mountains get the most rain with about 78 inches annually. The least rainfall is in the morning and the chance of rain increases in the afternoon.
